a family of six had squeezed into a 1000 square foot torrance, ca bungalow long enough. with the surf and sand less than 1/2 mile away and property values climbing out of their grasp, this california-native family wasn't going anywhere.
the front of the home oriented toward the beach, the rear toward the rising morning sun. we used these environmental references to re-organize the homes' internal layout. the kitchen and second-floor master suite would occupy the east side where the soft morning light could flood the spaces as each new day dawned. the living room, where friends and family could gather, was located on the west facade; a nod toward the activity of the beach culture.
